The Water Services Association of Australia (WSAA) is an industry association that represents the urban water industry in Australia.
WSAA provides a platform for sharing technical expertise and best practices among members. This includes developing industry standards, guidelines, and technical resources to ensure the safe and efficient management of water services.
Trench Preparation: A trench is excavated to the required depth and width for installing the pipes.
Bedding Layer: The 5mm minus crushed rock is spread along the bottom of the trench as a bedding layer. This layer provides a stable and even surface for the pipes to rest on.
Pipe Placement: The pipes are carefully positioned on the bedding layer according to the required alignment and gradient.
Surrounding Fill: More 5mm minus crushed rock is placed around the sides and on top of the pipes, creating a surrounding fill material that supports and stabilises the pipes.
Compaction: The crushed rock material is compacted in layers to ensure proper density and stability. Compaction minimises the potential for settling and movement over time.
Backfilling and Compaction: Once the pipes are properly embedded in the 5mm minus crushed rock, the remaining trench is backfilled with native soil or other suitable material. This backfill material is also compacted to prevent voids and ensure stability.
Surface Restoration: The trench is restored to the original ground level, and any necessary surface restoration is carried out.
5mm bedding is commonly used in a variety of pipe installations, including water mains, sewer systems, stormwater drainage, and other utility pipelines. It ensures proper support and stability for the pipes while facilitating efficient drainage and reducing potential long-term maintenance issues.
As with any construction practice, following engineering specifications and industry guidelines is essential to ensure the successful installation of 5mm bedding for pipes.
